There was to be expected sooner or later. After the various projects of emulation (see Bochs x86 emulation or PearPC PowerPC emulation) or para-virtualization (see Xen ) came the first open source virtualization solution: VirtualBox Innotek's.

The virtualization is a technique that allows an operating system to run unmodified in a particular environment, within your existing operating system. This particular environment, called "virtual machine" is in fact created by the virtualization software by identifying access to certain hardware and using certain features. The physical computer that hosts the virtual machine is usually called the "host", while the virtual machine is usually called a "guest".

The advantage to execute code in a virtual machine is that you can have it immediately available to a second operating system without having to resort to partitioning and dual boot, keeping intact the computing power for the guest system (which therefore runs at a speed almost identical to that which would have when installing a stand-alone).

In particular, VirtualBox is a solution that is very similar to that of commercial software such as Parallels or VMWare .

It ' is available for Windows, OSX and Linux.

A must try!
