.. There are a number of opensource software for the vector that have nothing to envy to the famed commercial packages in the industry. Among these I noted the excellent Inkscape is now at version 0:44.

"Among the features supported by SVG basic shapes, paths, text, signals, clones, transparencies, transforms, gradients, and grouping. Inkscape also supports Creative Commons meta-data, node editing, layers, layers, complex operations on layers, text on a path, and SVG XML editing. It imports several formats like EPS, Postscript, JPEG, PNG, BMP, and TIFF and exports PNG and other formats based on multiple carriers. "

Supported platforms are Linux, Mac OSX and Win32.
