White LED MacBook
luglio 27th. Archive , General , Hardware July 27th. 2007, 8:15 amWhen I decided to buy a Mac I did it with the conviction to:
- primarily a product of good quality;
- Secondly, performance of all respect;
- an operating system of great quality;
- ability to use the best of three worlds (just mac, linux and windows through virtualization Parallels )
In fact I got all these things but, over time and with use, I realized that probably - in terms of hardware - Apple has gone a little to save the quality of building components.
In fact, apart from fading in the chassis in which rest the wrists, I had a very strange thing: the white LED that indicates standby (necessary inter alia to know when the mac "resting with eyes open") at some point stopped working. Panic!
"Fortunately, the Mac is still under warranty" I said to myself. I call the service center of my city and state the problem: "Look, the little light white front has stopped working" I say to the technician on duty. And he answers: "You know, this is the first time I hear this issue." And I: "How long do you hold it for repair?". He said, 'Let's say it takes at least 3 weeks ... ... Wah! Unacceptable for the repair of a LED: 3 weeks are absolutely excessive!
I try to also contact the better team Tevac to see if any of them had already addressed the problem. They have suggested that I bring the "sick" to the nearest service center for treatment if ...
At this point I start to do my own investigation to determine the repairability "home-made. First step, search on google for other people with the same problem. After a few hours (yes already seems to have happened only to me ...) finally find a thread on the forum MacWorld (.. not only!): it seems that the cause is an intermittent contact of the strip carrying the signal to the LED! !
It seems that lowering the lid of the MacBook almost to close it allows the system to activate standby. By applying gentle pressure on the chassis above the LED reveals the secret: Lights!
I decide at this point that the repair can potentially be completed successfully, bypassing the assistance and the guarantee (the bottom is almost expired). I continue my investigation.
Search the Internet a guide to de-assemble the MacBook and I find a great site: iFixit . A visual guide, step-by-step, complete with all necessary information to complete the repair.
After about two hours "under the knife", my new MacBook has the winked White ![]()
It 'was sufficient to introduce a slight thickness of insulating tape over the ribbon bearing the LED signal: in this way the cover (the keyboard) can create the right pressure to keep the connector strip in place.
Final remark: the assembly of the MacBook is really worth. Observing the internal one realizes that the materials chosen for construction are of poor quality and - probably - some design choices are absolutely review ....
