Telephone Switchboard - PBX

The telephone switchboard, or in jargon PBX or PABX (Private Automatic Branch eXchange acronym), is an apparatus used in companies to provide an internal telephone system. Basically the two basic features of a PBX are:

  1. establish a connection between two telephone terminals uniquely identified through an internal numbering;
  2. allow so-called DDI, which allow incoming calls from the public network can achieve one or more telephone terminals of the telephone company.

Besides these basic functions, a telephone system can provide many other functions, such as:

  • Automatic Call Distribution (ACD);
  • Intercom, ability to interconnect the intercom system for access control and keyless entry;
  • Computer Telephony Integration (CTI)
  • Interactive Voice Response (IVR)
  • Documentation of telephone traffic
  • Music on Hold
  • Service Day / Night, variation of the input modes of external calls based on time
  • Recording of conversations
  • Least Cost Routing can route traffic out of the various operators / lines

This list is not exhaustive and many other functions and services are implemented with a PBX

In standard configuration, the PBX is interfaced to the public telephone line connections through analog or digital (ISDN) and are able to handle a variable number of lines from one to over a hundred.

VoIP PBX

The VoIP PBX is the natural evolution of the traditional PBX. The spread of LANs in the enterprise and the increasing availability of broadband Internet have made possible the transmission of telephone traffic over an IP network: in fact, VoIP is an acronym for Voice over Internet Protocol, Voice over IP and so.

The voice transmission over a standard network connection opens up a huge range of possibilities that do not mean only substantial economic savings on energy bills, but also solutions to problems that once were not easily solved or were not affordable: think of the connection two locations of a company in two locations in different countries.

If we want to know the benefits that derive from the adoption of a VoIP PBX, we list a few:

  1. Reduced cable costs as all the telephone traffic travels on the wired network. In fact, most VoIP devices have a power outlet "through" that allows you to share the same network connection on your PC.

  2. The telephone system is easily expandable, because - unlike the traditional PABX where you had to buy additional dedicated hardware - you just buy new phones and connect to the data network.

  3. Immediate availability of all the telephone services that are optional in the traditional PABX and payment.
