VirtualBox: open source virtualization!

virtualbox_osx_beta_255c.png

There was to be expected sooner or later. After the various projects of emulation (see Bochs x86 emulation or PearPC PowerPC emulation) or para-virtualization (see Xen ) came the first open source virtualization solution: VirtualBox Innotek's.

The virtualization is a technique that allows an operating system to run unmodified in a particular environment, within your existing operating system. This particular environment, called "virtual machine" is in fact created by the virtualization software by identifying access to certain hardware and using certain features. The physical computer that hosts the virtual machine is usually called the "host", while the virtual machine is usually called a "guest".

The advantage to execute code in a virtual machine is that you can have it immediately available to a second operating system without having to resort to partitioning and dual boot, keeping intact the computing power for the guest system (which therefore runs at a speed almost identical to that which would have when installing a stand-alone).

In particular, VirtualBox is a solution that is very similar to that of commercial software such as Parallels or VMWare .

It ' is available for Windows, OSX and Linux.

A must try!

Ubuntu 7 + kernel 2.6.20: bugs!

ubuntu.jpg

Yesterday I downloaded the latest release of the popular Ubuntu distribution and I have 7 installed on my forklift at home (Athlon XP motherboard with VIA chipset) and everything went smoothly. I could appreciate the improvements made to this - already great - binary distribution (even if you just do not forget gentoo ..). However, this morning I brought with me in the office of the cd Ubuntu 7.04 and I tried to install it on the forklift in the office (P4 1.6 Ghz, Intel motherboard chipsets) and ... wham! I can not even get to the desktop everything is planted with a scanty error:

/bin/sh/: can't access tty; job control turned off.

In nothing are served with passage of the various tests esoteric parameters to boot. It seems that this is a bug already known to comunitàdegli developers, as can be seen from this link:

nLite .. or create your setup cd for XP!

A few days ago a friend has given me his laptop, an HP nx6310, for a reinstallation. Immediately I asked the recovery CD that usually comes out of the notebook package: Lost! We contacted HP but it seems that you can not have a copy. So we had to proceed to a reinstallation of XP, starting with the CD but ... total luck: The notebook has a SATA drive not recognized by the installer of XP.

"Vabè" - you say - "you download the floppy driver from HP and go" ... Too bad the laptop in question does not have a floppy drive!

Wandering on the internet I immediately found the solution: nLite ( http://www.nliteos.com ). This great utility allows you to customize the installer of XP in many places (and even allows you to integrate Service Packs) and insert the missing drivers. Said and done. I customized a Windows XP installation disk in a few minutes, I burned (all the while using nLite) and the installation was successful. Spectacular!
