Led White MacBook

16.jpg

When I decided to buy a Mac I did so with the conviction to:

  • primarily a product of good quality;
  • secondly, respectable performance;
  • an operating system of undoubted quality;
  • ability to use the best of three worlds (just mac, linux and windows via virtualization Parallels )

In fact, I've got all these things but, over time and with use, I realized that probably - in terms of hardware - Apple has gone a little savings on the quality of their components.

In fact, apart from fading in the chassis in which rest the wrists, happened to me a very strange thing: the white LED that indicates the standby (among other things essential to understand when the machine is "at rest with eyes open") at some point stopped working. Panic!

VirtualBox: open source virtualization!

virtualbox_osx_beta_255c.png

There was to be expected sooner or later. After the various projects of emulation (see Bochs x86 emulation or PearPC PowerPC emulation) or para-virtualization (see Xen ) came the first Open Source virtualization solution: VirtualBox Innotek.

The virtualization is a technique that allows an unmodified operating system to run within a particular environment, within your existing operating system. This particular environment, called "virtual machine" is in fact created by the virtualization software by identifying access to certain hardware and using certain features. The computer that physically hosts the virtual machine is usually called a "host", while the virtual machine is usually called "guest".

The advantage to run code in a virtual machine is that you can instantly have available a second operating system without having to resort to partitioning and dual boot, keeping intact the power calculation for the guest system (which therefore runs at a speed almost identical to that which would have when installing stand-alone).

In particular, VirtualBox is a solution that is very similar to that of commercial software such as Parallels or VMWare .

E ' available for Windows, OSX and Linux.

A must try!

nLite .. or create your setup cd for XP!

A few days ago a friend has given me his laptop, an HP nx6310, for a reinstallation. Immediately I asked the recovery CD that usually comes out of the notebook package: Lost! We contacted HP but it seems that you can not have a copy. So you have carried out starting with a reinstall of XP cd but ... total luck: The notebook has a SATA drive not recognized by the installer of XP.

"Vabè" - you say - "floppy download the drivers from HP and vai" ... Too bad the laptop in question does not have a floppy drive!

Wandering on the internet I immediately found the solution: nLite ( http://www.nliteos.com ). This great utility allows you to customize the installer for XP in many ways (even lets you integrate Service Packs) and insert the missing drivers. Said and done. I customized the installation disk of XP in a few minutes, I burned (all the while using nLite) and the installation was successful. Spectacular!

SKYPHO

Some time ago I subscribed to a telephone subscription with a carrier called Italian Eutelia . The peculiarity is that it is a VoIP telephone service flat resulted in a common 4Mbit ADSL: 15 hours included in the monthly fee for local calls and long distance calls, free calls to all numbers Eutelia.
I must say the service has always been quality.

After some time, I discovered - through a friend - the existence of a telephone service called SKYPHO that allows, once registration is completed, activate a VoIP account and obtain a free geographic number (eg 02 xxxxx): with the enormous advantage of being able to always have a landline number which should be called :)

Nothing extraordinary since here, if were not for the fact that the service SKYPHO is provided by Eutelia! Which means I can call home and all users SKYPHO free. In addition, tariffs for outgoing calls to non-Eutelia numbers are quite favorable.

At this point all that remains is to put on a small PBX Asterisk-powered :)
