White LED MacBook

16.jpg

When I decided to buy a Mac I did it with the conviction to:

  • primarily a product of good quality;
  • Secondly, performance of all respect;
  • an operating system of great quality;
  • ability to use the best of three worlds (just mac, linux and windows through virtualization Parallels )

In fact I got all these things but, over time and with use, I realized that probably - in terms of hardware - Apple has gone a little to save the quality of building components.

In fact, apart from fading in the chassis in which rest the wrists, I had a very strange thing: the white LED that indicates standby (necessary inter alia to know when the mac "resting with eyes open") at some point stopped working. Panic!

VirtualBox: opensource virtualization!

virtualbox_osx_beta_255c.png

Was to be expected sooner or later. After several emulation projects (see Bochs for x86 emulation or PearPC emulation for PowerPC) or para-virtualization (see Xen ) came the first open source virtualization solution: VirtualBox the Innotek.

The virtualization is a technique that allows an unmodified operating system to run within a particular environment, within your existing operating system. This particular environment, called "virtual machine", is created precisely by virtualization software by identifying access to specific hardware and by some characteristics. The computer that physically hosts the virtual machine is usually called a "host", while the virtual machine is commonly called a "guest".

The advantage to run code in a virtual machine is that it can be immediately available to a second operating system without having to partition and dual boot, keeping intact the computing power to the guest (which therefore runs at a speed almost identical to that which would have when installing a stand-alone).

In particular, VirtualBox is a solution that resembles that of commercial software such as Parallels or VMWare .

It ' available for Windows, OSX and Linux.

A must try!

nLite .. or create your XP setup cd!

A few days ago a friend has given me his laptop, an HP nx6310 for a reinstallation. Immediately I asked the recovery CD that usually comes out from the pack of the notebook: Lost! We contacted HP but it seems that you can not have a copy. So you have carried out a reinstallation starting with the XP CD but ... total luck: the notebook has a SATA disk not recognized by the installer of XP.

"Vabè" - you say - "download the drivers from the floppy and go to HP" ... Too bad the laptop in question does not have a floppy drive!

Surfing the web I immediately found the solution: nLite ( http://www.nliteos.com ). This amazing utility enables you to customize the installer of XP in many places (even lets you integrate Service Packs) and insert the missing drivers. Said than done. I have a customized XP installation disc in a few minutes, I burned (all the while using nLite) and the installation was successful. Spectacular!

Skypho

Some time ago I subscribed to a phone carrier called Italian Eutelia . The peculiarity is that it is a VoIP telephone service flat brought on a common ADSL 4Mbit: included in the monthly 15 hours of local calls and long distance calls, free calls to all numbers Eutelia.
I must say that the service has always been quality.

A few time, I discovered - through a friend - the existence of a telephone service called Skypho allowing once registration is completed, activate a VoIP account and get a free geographical number (ie 02 xxxxx): with the huge advantage of being able to always have a landline number which should be called :)

Nothing extraordinary so far, were it not for the fact that the service is provided by Eutelia Skypho! Which means I can call home and all users Skypho free. Moreover the tariffs for outgoing calls to numbers not-Eutelia are quite favorable.

At this point is to just set up a small PBX Asterisk-powered :)
